ME360 Exercise 2:
Bell

The objective of this assignment is to copy a sketch of a bell and model it in Solidworks. With this model, perform a frequency study and use those frequencies to produce a .wav that sounds like the modeled bell.

Procedure

The first step is to import this image into Solidworks to be able to sketch over it. This is done by going to Tools > Sketch Tools > Sketch Picture. Then the image can be sketched over with the Spline Tool to match all the curves.

Shown on the right is the result, with the material type set to "Commericalized Bronze"

Then, a frequency study is performed on the model, with a fixture placed at the top (to simulate a real hanging bell). A mesh is placed over the model and the study can begin.

The model produces simulated natural frequencies that can be inputted into this MATLAB script to simulate the audio of the modeled bell. (the sine function below takes frequencies as ω in Rad/sec; sin(ω*2π*t)... )
