Escape Room

Spring 2023

This project involved creating the floor plan of an escape room in Solidworks.

Abstract:

This project was undertaken through a colleague in BU Questrom School of Business.

This project exemplifies my ability to work on an interdisciplinary team. I was able to exercise my CAD skills and communication skills.

My colleague was unfamiliar with what he needed for his final business plan, but while showcasing my past work to him, he was able to pinpoint what he wanted and tasked me with creating a similar design to my other CAD for Questrom business plans. He tasked me with creating an escape room floor plan. This would be done in Solidworks for aesthetic purposes.

Overall, this project was rewarding because I was able to use my expertise in Solidworks to help out a colleague. He kept calling it magic and wizardry, but I assured him it was just years of practice and familiarity with Solidworks and CAD in general.

Design:

This project was an exercise in concise communication and teamwork. My colleague and I sat down to hash the details of how an escape room floor plan could be laid out. We worked back and forth with drawings and settled on the layout shown below.

Once the major details were decided upon, I could begin to transform this layout into an aesthetically pleasing Solidworks rendering. I also had to work around some fallacies in the room design, which we worked through in subsequent meetings.

For example, the closet and office in the top right of the hand drawing leaves an odd amount of empty hall space to the right. And the reception desk had no way to get behind it, so the side was cut out for passage. Small details like this were adjusted to make it more realistic as a floor plan.
